Shea Moisture Review: The Raw Shea Butter line

Shea-Moisture-Raw-Shea-Butter-Products-348x225After a year of wearing my natural hair, it would seem that I would have it all figured out by now. However, these kinks and curls never cease to surprise me. Everyday I discover something new about my hair, but the most difficult thing by far has been finding the right products.

In general, natural hair care products can be a little tricky because not all of them work the way that are advertised to, but I think that I have finally found my staple natural hair products. For the past three months I have been using the Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter line, and I am in love. Each product in the line is sulfate free and made with sea kelp, argon oil, and shea butter, but they work in different ways.

Here is a run down of each:

  1.  Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo- This is said to be a moisturizing shampoo, and I completely agree with that. Normally shampoos have a tendency to be stripping to the hair, and the hair will feel very dried out. However, The Shea Moisture shampoo is gentle and it actually feels like its adding moisture to the hair which is super unique to me. Another thing that I like about this product is that I don’t have to use a lot of it to clean my hair. A little bit definitely goes a long way.
  2. Raw Sea Butter Restorative ConditionerThis can be a leave-in or rinse out conditioner, but for the most part I choose to just rinse it out. I like using this product after I have just finished shampooing my hair, and also when I am just doing a simple co-wash. It’s great because its creamy and moisturizing, but it’s lightweight at the same time. Also, it works well  with detangling hair.
  3. Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque- This product is an intense conditioning treatment that deeply penetrates and moisturizes the hair. Out of all of the products from the Shea Moisture line that I am reviewing, this one is my absolute favorite. I used it when I had a heat damage scare, and it helped nurse my hair back to health. Now, I mainly use this product as a deep conditioner every two weeks, or I use it as a styler when I want to twist my hair up.
  4. Raw Shea Butter Extra- Moisture Detangler- Although this product is advertised as a detangler, I don’t really agree that it is. Out of all of the products in the Raw Sea Butter line, I am the least pleased with this one. This product did not help to detangle my hair like it was supposed to. However, it is highly moisturizing. So, I have repurposed it as an oil moisturizer and I use it daily when styling my hair. While I’m not sure if I would purchase this again, I am currently still using it because I don’t want it to go to waste.

Overall, these are some of the best products that I’ve used in my natural hair journey so far. I love the fact that they are sulfate and paraben free, and I love that they are so gentle and moisturizing. I would definitely recommend this line of products to anyone who is natural, or who is going natural.

The Benefits of Stretching Your Relaxer

Traditionally we are told by hair stylists that relaxed hair should be touched up every six weeks.  Waiting longer than six weeks however, can drastically improve the health of your hair and scalp.  This is referred as “stretching your relaxer”.  While stretching your relaxer can take some getting used to, there are many benefits.  Here’s why you may want to consider stretching your relaxer and how to care for your hair while stretching.

You have more flexibility with your hairstyles.  Once you touch up your hair it will be straight but as you stretch the relaxer you will have the chance to try some natural styles if you want without committing to going natural.

It prevents overlapping because the hair is allowed to grow out more and it will be easier to keep the relaxer from getting on the already relaxed hair.

Your scalp gets a break from the harsh chemicals.

You save money

It can potentially lead to longer hair growth

If you decide to stretch your relaxer realize that you will have to change the way you care for your hair or risk hair breakage.  The line of demarcation, which is the point where your relaxed hair and new growth meets, is very fragile and prone to breakage.  Here are some tips to avoiding breakage at the line of demarcation.

  1. Never let your new growth curl up.  When your hair dries, make sure it dries in a stretched state by braiding it or putting it in multiple small ponytails.
  2. Keep the new growth moisturized by deep conditioning and using leave in conditioner
  3. Only use wide tooth combs and refrain from combing your hair in general
  4. Add products that contain protein to your routine to strengthen your hair and prevent breakage.
  5. Once you have a very considerable amount of new growth wear low manipulation styles such as twist outs or buns.  You can also choose to wear weave or braids.
  6. Lay off of the heat.
  7. Be very gentle with your hair especially when you are at the end of your stretch.

Almost treat your hair as if you are transitioning to natural hair.  Think the stretched relaxer lifestyle is right for you?  Try it!  Try to wait a little more than six weeks before your next touch up and feel free to share with me your experience!

Are You Trending?…

Here are three fashion trends heating up your summer:

Crop Tops– crop tops are worn normally with high-waisted jeans or a high- waisted skirt. These fashion beauties not only come in different colors, but some come with cute designs or animated characters. They can be fitted or slouchy, but always showing your tummy. They can have sleeves or not sleeves, whatever your preference. But, don’t think you’ll look like an overgrown 8 year oldin your crop top; matching it with the right bottoms can turn that animated character into a fashion statement.

Chambray Shirts– Denim will always be in, until the end of time. But what if you spiced it up a bit. Nothing over the top. Just some small hot rhinestones to spruce it up a bit. Make it all shiny and new again. Chambray shirts are just what your looking for. They are lightweight shirts that are usually found in different shades of denim. But, these shirts don’t just have to have rhinestones, they can have studs, spikes, glitter, or pearls or even some patchwork, or the buttons could just be the coolest thing. Pretty much any type of arts and crafts item you can find. How to use it in a look? Wear it open over a cute summer dress, or buttoned up, paired with some cute shorts.

new-chambray-f21Retro- We aren’t saying go back in time per se. But, we are saying to go back in time for fashion purposes. Some of the greatest fashion can be slightly modified to fit into this decade perfectly. And some fashions need no modification at all. But, wearing a super flared flirty skirt with perhaps a collared shirt for that certain look. Or maybe rocking some retro- nerd/chic glasses.

Trending doesn’t mean your following…it just means you know what’s in.

Should you make it official

Many of us have that one person who we love to call up at 12am to snuggle up with, especially if it’s storming out side. Its just a great feeling to have someone to hold. Lately though,  feelings have been developing and you’re trying to figure out should you make that move.
We all have heard the saying, “you can’t turn a hoe into a house wife.” If this is you Who says this, go stand in a corner, face the wall and think about your life. Everyone has the opportunity to have a relationship, even the snuggle buddies.
If you  find yourself catching feelings for your snuggle buddy, then the first step is admitting you like them out loud. The second is to talk to them about it. Chances are they are feeling the same way. Don’t be afraid to lose your snuggle buddy. Thats one thing about snuggle buddies. they are easily replaceable.
Once you talk to them and you both are feeling the same way, then start making moves towards a relationship but subtract all physical contact for at least a 2 weeks. Your whole relationship prior was based on physical needs so now to make sure that this is actually attraction you are feeling for this person and not just lust, you need to spend time together with out touching. If you survive the 2 weeks and still have strong feelings for him/her then congratulations you have a new boyfriend/ girlfriend.
Don’t allow others to judge you.if you are happy with your new boo then that’s all that matters. ( as long as its a healthy relationship).

Secretly Damaged

In high school, he was one of the popular guys. Everyone loved to be in his presence. People would come around him to experience his great sense of humor and to simply let everyone know that they were cool enough to have his attention. He appeared to have it all; money, a car, ladies chasing after him, and the potential to be nothing less than great. Now, he’s a first year college student. College would, actually should be a breeze for him right? He is supposed to go to a big university, make straight A’s, have tons of friends, and just live his life to the fullest with no worries. That’s how it’s supposed to be, right? Would you ever imagine that this great of a guy deals with issues that nearly drags him to depression every now and then? No one would ever see THIS guy feeling lonely and lacking confidence. People wipe out the reality that THIS guy actually has a past…

As she walks past you, you are greeted with the biggest smile. Her smile is one that is not only gorgeous, but it also warms your heartdepressed and worried and in a way it comforts you. She is intelligent, top of her class in high school. You notice that her talents are beyond measure as she pursues her passion. Now that she’s in college, she remains humble and continues to enjoy life as if she does not have a care in the world. She appeared to have it all; beauty, brains, ambition, and a personality that lights up any room. She is supposed to go to a big university, make straight A’s, have tons of friends, and just live life to the fullest with no worries. That’s how it’s supposed to be, right? If I told you that she had the self-esteem of someone who has been battered all of their life, would you believe it? No one can see that THIS girl gives her all to people who do nothing but step all over her and ruin her heart. Everyone forgets that THIS girl has a past…

“Everything that glitters isn’t gold.” “Never judge a book by it’s cover.” All of our lives we have been told to never attempt to understand a person until you understand their struggle. However, we do not apply to everyday life. In our eyes, if you seem to have it all together, then you do. Society places people on a pedestal based off of how they present themselves. We tend to forget that contrary to outer appearances, no one is perfect.

You will never truly understand someone’s story unless you are placed in their shoes. People, young or old, battle with anything from bad relationships, health issues, and low confidence to family issues and financial burdens. Everyone does not show their misery so it is not always possible to decipher if someone is going through something  or not. You may come encounter with “That Guy” or “That Girl” and never even realize it.
