Spring Break “Staycation”

It’s that time again! Spring break season is upon us and it’s time to enjoy somstaycation1e fun in the sun! You’ve probably have planning the most epic trip for months now…or not. The reality is, everyone does not have the luxury of enjoying their spring break on a sunny beach or anywhere else besides their bed. So, what do you do if you have no plans? Here’s some good news. You can make this spring break worthwhile without traveling. Here’s some tips on how to have the perfect “staycation!”

shaw-and-pepeCatch up on some rest. Sleeping is not always the ideal way to spend a break, but think about it. You’ve been swamped with assignments and due dates. You’ve been super busy with extracurricular activities. On top of that, you have a job that keeps you even more busy. Why not use this week to rest? Sleep in! Sleep all day! Give your body and mind a much needed break.

Stay on top of your assignments. Use this class-free week to catch up on assignments and even get ahead. You have an entire week with no plans, so use your time wisely by staying on top of those due dates. Also, study for upcoming exams. You will appreciate that A+ even more!

Invest in some “me time.” With no distractions for a week, you have more time to focus on yourself. It is important that we take time out for ourselves once in awhile. Take a walk in the park, go shopping, or even take yourself on a few dates. Enjoy being with YOURSELF for once.

Be productive. Since your schedule will be cleared for a week, use this time to plan for your future. You can search for internships, apply for scholarships, shadow professionals on their jobs, research post-grad options, etc. There is so much you could be doing to plan ahead during your break.

Spend time with family or other friends who also don’t have spring break plans. I know a spring break with your family is not always the first thing we think about, but it is better than being bored! If time with your family does not sound appealing, then find other friends who do not have plans. Even if you both have nothing to do, it is always better to 120613-414635-tdy-120612-staycation.blocks_desktop_largebe bored with someone than to be bored by yourself!

As you can see, a “staycation” is not that bad! Instead of focusing on not having anything to do, use these tips or create other things to do to pass your time. You may even enjoy your “staycation” more than you would’ve enjoyed an actual vacation; you never know until you try it!

Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity “Closed” at University of Oklahoma

When video of Sigma Alpha Epsilon singing a racist chant surfaced, the fraternity’s national headquarters immediately took action and closed the chapter. Read the statement from SAE’s national headquarters below:

“Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s national headquarters has closed its Oklahoma Kappa chapter at the University of Oklahoma following the discovery of an inappropriate video. In addition, all of the members have been suspended, and those members who are responsible for the incident may have their membership privileges revoked permanently.

We apologize for the unacceptable and racist behavior of the individuals in the video, and we are disgusted that any member would act in such a way. Furthermore, we are embarrassed by this video and offer our empathy not only to anyone outside the organization who is offended but also to our brothers who come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities.

This type of racist behavior will not be tolerated and is not consistent with the values and morals of our fraternity. We have more than 15,000 collegiate members across the nation, and this incident should not reflect on other brothers because this type of hateful action is not what Sigma Alpha Epsilon stands for. This is absolutely not who we are.

We teach our members to serve as role models in their communities and to live up to our creed, “The True Gentleman.” When members fail to do so, we will not hesitate to take corrective actions or to impose sanctions. Any behavior that is not aligned with the conduct we expect is unacceptable. Equally unacceptable is bystander behavior of members who fail to intervene when they witness conduct that deviates from our beliefs.

“I was not only shocked and disappointed but disgusted by the outright display of racism displayed in the video,” said Brad Cohen, the fraternity’s national president. “SAE is a diverse organization, and we have zero tolerance for racism or any bad behavior. When we learned about this incident, I called an immediate board meeting, and we determined with no mental reservation whatsoever that this chapter needed to be closed immediately. I am proud of my fellow board members because we mean what we say.”

Alumni who serve on the chapter’s house corporation board and who serve as advisers are appalled by the video and the song that was sung in it. They do not condone offensive and hateful behavior and will hold accountable the men who participated in the incident.”

David Boren, President of University of Oklahoma, also issued a statement Monday morning:

“Although Sigma Alpha Epsilon regrets the closure, we believe members must be held responsible for their actions. We are hopeful that we can re-establish the Oklahoma Kappa chapter at some point in the future with a group of men who exemplify our beliefs and who serve as leaders on campus and in the community.

To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves “Sooners.” Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members.

Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between this University and the local SAE chapter are hereby severed. I direct that the house be closed and that members will remove their personal belongings from the house by midnight tomorrow. Those needing to make special arrangements for positions shall contact the Dean of Students.

All of us will redouble our efforts to create the strongest sense of family and community. We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue. There must be zero tolerance for racism everywhere in our nation.”

Members of the fraternity have all been suspended and were ordered to move out of the fraternity house. Those who were involved in the incident may have their membership privileges revoked indefinitely. Brad Cohen, National President of SAE, made it very clear that he hopes those who were involved get expelled from University of Oklahoma.
